Your Guide to Spring Lawn Care in the Mountain States

Here in the mountain states, our spring weather is pretty unpredictable. It can be sunny and 65 degrees one day, and then we might see snow the very next day! This can make it a little tough to know how to keep up with your beneficial lawn care practices, like watering and mowing, throughout periods of inconsistent weather conditions. Here are some tips on how you can work around the spring weather to help your lawn grow lush, green, and healthy!

Watering During Periods of Drought

If you have a south-facing lawn, which receives a lot of sunlight, you'll definitely need to supplement your lawn’s natural water intake, especially during periods of drought (or no snow cover). In this case, you should follow a weekly watering regimen to avoid long-term damage to the crown – the growing point – of the grass plant. It’s best to water deeply, infrequently, and in the early morning when temperatures are cooler and the water will not evaporate.

Spring Cleanup

During a period when your lawn is free from snow cover, take the time to perform a spring cleanup. Use a leaf rake to clear debris from the surface of your lawn and to stimulate plant growth, essentially “waking up” your lawn for the growing season.

The First Mow of the Season

After your lawn is raked during your spring cleanup, you can perform the first mow of the season anytime your lawn is clear of snow. This will also help your lawn wake up and help kickstart the growing season. Now is a great time to sharpen your mower blades and perform any other necessary mower maintenance to ensure your equipment is in good working order for the season ahead!

Spring Fertilization

Rest assured that spring weather like snow, rainfall, and fluctuating temperatures will have no negative affect on your spring fertilization. Our high-percentage, slow-release granular fertilizer will release nutrients over time, as the air temperatures continue to warm up, giving your lawn a boost from the get-go, and then continually feeding it throughout the next several weeks and months.
